A comparative rater lets a CSR or producer enter a home or auto risk once and see premiums from several appointed carriers side by side. The main products independent agencies look at are EZLynx Rating Engine, PL Rating, Applied Rater, ITC TurboRater and QuoteRUSH. This guide covers how to judge them. It does not rank them. Rankings live on the category page.
Know how a rater gets its numbers
Raters don’t all produce a premium the same way, and the method affects how much you can trust the number on screen.
- Real-time carrier connections. The rater sends the risk to the carrier’s rating system and gets a premium back. Vertafore describes PL Rating’s “real-time carrier connection” to over 300 carriers. ITC requires carriers in TurboRater to meet a minimum response time for real-time rates.
- Rates held by the rater. ITC’s carrier page also describes a “manufactured rating method,” one of several methods carriers can use. When the rater calculates the premium itself, the result is only as current as the rate data the rater holds.
- Automated entry into carrier sites. Applied’s brochure says Applied Rater works by automating the entry of required data into the insurer’s own site.
How you finish the sale also differs. EZLynx says you quote in its rater, then go to the carrier’s portal to bind and issue. Vertafore says you can bind a policy inside PL Rating with one click for participating carriers. ITC asks carriers to let agents either bind in TurboRater or bridge the quote data into the carrier’s point-of-sale system.
Why it matters: if a carrier’s quote is not real-time, or you have to re-answer questions after the bridge, the final premium can differ from the comparison screen. Ask about this carrier by carrier.
Start with your carriers, not the software
A headline carrier count tells you little. What matters is whether the carriers you’re appointed with are live in your states, for the lines you write, and by which method.
Published figures as of October 2026:
| Rater | Published carrier figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| EZLynx Rating Engine | 330+ carriers, 48 states | EZLynx product page |
| PL Rating | 300+ carriers (datasheet); “320+” on product page | Vertafore |
| Applied Rater | 525+ insurers | Applied brochure (about 2020; ask for a current figure) |
| ITC TurboRater | 250+ carriers | ITC carrier page |
| QuoteRUSH | No count published | QuoteRUSH site uses a state map |
Before any demo, build a short carrier list:
- List your top 10 personal lines carriers by written premium.
- For each, note your states and lines (auto, home, condo, renters, dwelling fire, umbrella, flood).
- Send the list to each vendor. Ask them to mark every carrier, state and line as real-time, rater-calculated, or not available.
- Ask which carriers allow binding in the rater and which require a bridge to the carrier portal.
- Ask whether package discounts (home plus auto) are reflected in the comparison. Vertafore says PL Rating reflects multi-line discounts in real time. Ask every vendor to show it.
If a carrier you rely on is missing or not real-time, your staff will still be keying that carrier by hand.
Built into your AMS, or bolted on?
Most agencies end up choosing the rater that fits their agency management system (AMS). Check what “integration” means in practice.
- EZLynx says pairing its rater with the EZLynx Management System means there is no data to transfer, because both share one platform. Its blog notes that stand-alone raters often need a bridge or manual transfer into the AMS.
- Vertafore lists PL Rating integrations with AMS360, Sagitta, QQCatalyst and “over 20 other management systems.”
- Applied says Applied Rater integrates rate quotes into your management system and online web forms.
- QuoteRUSH says it integrates with lead vendors and agency or lead management systems, and imports leads automatically.
Questions to ask:
- Does a new quote create a prospect in the AMS, or do I re-enter it?
- When a quote is bound, what flows back to the AMS: the policy, the premium, the documents?
- Can I start a remarket from an existing AMS client without retyping drivers and vehicles?
- Is the integration two-way and real-time, or a nightly sync?
Prefill and third-party data
Prefill cuts entry time and reduces errors that change the premium later.
- EZLynx lists LexisNexis, Fenris, MSB and Google Maps as data sources.
- Vertafore lists LexisNexis-based driver and vehicle validation as a PL Rating add-on. Its Violation Prefill, available in several states, pulls driving history to help avoid MVR chargebacks from carriers.
Ask who pays for each report, whether it’s per pull or included, and whether the carrier re-pulls the same data at bind.
Lines beyond home and auto
If you write more than standard home and auto, check line support per carrier.
- Vertafore lists auto, homeowners, package, renters and condo, plus motorcycle and dwelling fire in California. It also shows flood quotes from National Flood Services, Selective and Aon Edge next to home quotes.
- ITC lists auto, motorcycle and property rating for TurboRater.
- QuoteRUSH’s site describes its base package as homeowner and automobile rating software. Ask which other lines it quotes in your states.
Rate accuracy: test it before you buy
A free trial or sandbox is the only way to see how close the rater’s numbers are to what a carrier will actually bind. Ask for one, then run this test:
- Pick 10 recent, real quotes you wrote by hand on carrier portals. Include a clean preferred auto, a youthful driver, a driver with violations, a package, and a home with an older roof or in a coastal county.
- Rerun each one in the rater using the same data.
- Compare the rater’s premium with the carrier-portal premium, carrier by carrier.
- For the closest matches, bridge or bind (in the test environment) and see whether the premium changes.
- Write down every question the carrier asks after the bridge that the rater didn’t.
Mismatches aren’t always the rater’s fault. Credit, prior insurance and claims data pulled at bind can move the premium. The point is to find out which carriers you can quote from the comparison screen with confidence, and which you’ll still check by hand.
Contracts and exit terms
Raters are sticky. Your quote history, templates and staff habits live inside them. Get these answers in writing:
- Contract length and whether it auto-renews.
- Pricing basis: per user, per location, or per agency. What happens when you add a producer.
- Whether adding carriers or states costs extra.
- Price increase caps at renewal.
- Cost of prefill and report pulls.
- Whether you can export quote history and client data, and in what format.
- Notice period to cancel, and how long you keep read-only access after you leave.
Questions to ask in the demo
- Show me a quote for one of my carriers in my state. Is it real-time?
- Show me a home-and-auto package with the multi-line discount applied.
- Show me the bridge to the carrier. What do I have to re-answer?
- What happens when a carrier’s portal or rating service is down?
- How fast are carrier rate changes reflected?
- What does onboarding include, and who sets up carrier credentials?
- Can consumers quote from our website, and where do those leads land?
Matching the rater to your agency
These are starting points, not rankings.
| Your situation | Where to start |
|---|---|
| You run EZLynx Management System | EZLynx Rating Engine shares the platform, per EZLynx |
| You run AMS360, Sagitta or QQCatalyst | PL Rating lists direct integrations with all three |
| You run Applied Epic | Ask Applied how Applied Rater and EZLynx each connect to Epic |
| Home-heavy book with flood | Compare flood options shown next to home quotes |
| Auto book that includes motorcycles | Check motorcycle support per carrier and state |
| Heavy internet lead volume | Ask about lead import and consumer quoting forms |
Whatever you shortlist, the deciding test is the same: your carriers, your states, your real risks.
