Who wins with it

Choose it if

You already use Applied Rater with Applied Epic or TAM and want to keep a carrier-site-fill workflow while you plan your next step with Applied.

Skip it if

You are buying a new rater today, since Applied's current website promotes Applied Epic Quotes Personal Lines and EZLynx instead.

The good and the catch

+Very broad carrier reach, historically. Applied's 2020 brochure said Applied Rater automated quoting for more than 525 insurers, the most of any US quoting provider.
+Fills the carrier's own site. It enters data directly into insurers' quoting sites, so the rate you see comes from each carrier's own system.
+Wide range of personal lines. The brochure lists auto, home, umbrella, renters, condo, dwelling fire, flood and toys.
+Two-way link with Applied Epic and TAM. A 2017 release says Epic and TAM users can push prospect data into Applied Rater and get the updated application back.
−No current product page. As of October 2026, Applied's US site has no standalone Applied Rater page, and the newest collateral we found is a 2020 brochure.
−Applied is pushing a different product. Applied markets Applied Epic Quotes Personal Lines as its comparative rater, built into Epic with no separate rater subscription.
−Carrier figures are years old. The 500+ and 525+ insurer counts come from 2017 and 2020 materials, so current coverage is unknown.
−No public pricing or terms. Applied publishes no price, contract length or setup time for Applied Rater.

What it is

Applied Rater is a cloud-based personal lines quoting application from Applied Systems. It grew out of SEMCAT, a US comparative rating provider that Applied acquired. A November 2015 Insurance Business feature listed it as “Applied Rater (SEMCAT).” Applied describes it as a tool that enters your client data directly into each insurer’s quoting site, so you get the carrier’s own rate without rekeying.

Before you buy, know where the product stands. As of October 2026, Applied’s US website has no standalone Applied Rater page. Old product links redirect to a general agencies page. The newest Applied Rater collateral we found is a brochure dated 2020. Applied’s current site promotes Applied Epic Quotes Personal Lines, a comparative rater built into Applied Epic. Applied also owns EZLynx, which it agreed to buy in January 2021. Applied hasn’t announced an end date; its site now promotes Epic Quotes Personal Lines. We found no retirement notice on Applied’s product pages or in press (checked October 2026). Ask Applied directly about its roadmap.

How it works

Based on Applied’s 2017 release and 2020 brochure:

  1. Start from the management system. Applied Epic and Applied TAM users push prospect data into the Applied Rater application. The updated application flows back to the prospect’s file.
  2. Prefill and verify. Through a LexisNexis partnership, Applied Rater checks driver and dwelling details automatically.
  3. Enter once, fill many. The tool enters the shared data into each insurer’s quoting site from inside the application.
  4. Add usage-based discounts. You can enroll a policy or vehicle in participating carriers’ telematics programs across all carriers at once, instead of carrier by carrier.
  5. Present. Built-in proposal templates pull quotes into a client-ready document.

Where it’s strong

Carrier reach. Applied’s 2020 brochure said Applied Rater automated quoting for more than 525 insurers nationwide. Applied called that the broadest coverage of any US quoting provider. Insurance Business reported 500+ carriers in 2015.

Rate accuracy by design. The rate comes from the carrier’s own site, not a separate rate table, so it reflects the carrier’s current rating. That is Applied’s main accuracy claim.

Line breadth. The brochure lists auto, home, umbrella, renters, condo, dwelling fire, flood and toys. That is wider than several competitors publish.

Where it falls short

Uncertain future. There is no current product page, the newest collateral we found is from 2020, and a newer Applied product does the same job. Applied’s own Epic page says rating inside Epic means “no separate rater subscription.” For a new purchase, that is a strong signal to evaluate Epic Quotes Personal Lines or EZLynx instead.

Old numbers. The 500+ (2017) and 525+ (2020) insurer counts are years old. We could not find a current figure.

Applied-first AMS fit. Applied’s own documentation covers Applied Epic and Applied TAM. A 2015 Insurance Business profile said it integrated with most agency management systems, but we found no current list.

No published speed or accuracy data. Applied publishes no turnaround times or quote-to-bind accuracy figures for Applied Rater.

Pricing and setup

Applied does not publish pricing, contract terms or setup times for Applied Rater. If you are an existing user, ask Applied about renewal terms, any migration path to Epic Quotes Personal Lines or EZLynx, and whether data and templates carry over.

Who should look elsewhere

  • Applied Epic agencies buying today: Applied Epic Quotes Personal Lines is Applied’s current comparative rater. Applied says it covers hundreds of carriers and can bind a quote straight into a policy record in Epic.
  • Agencies not on Epic: EZLynx’s Rating Engine, also owned by Applied, publishes 330+ carriers across 48 states.
  • Vertafore AMS agencies: Vertafore’s PL Rating documents direct integration with AMS360, Sagitta and QQCatalyst.
