Who wins with it
You check a steady volume of commercial policies and want to choose between doing it in-house with AI or outsourcing it with E&O coverage.
Your book is mostly personal lines and you want an off-the-shelf tool rather than a custom engagement.
The good and the catch
What it is
Patra is an insurance operations company based in El Dorado Hills, California. It has run outsourced back-office work for agencies, brokers, wholesalers and MGAs for about 20 years, according to the vendor. Its policy checking product, sold as Policy Checking AI, compares an issued policy against the documents it should match and flags the differences.
Patra says it was first to market with AI policy checking, and it released a self-service version in June 2024 after early adopters had used it since early 2024. In January 2026 it added Commercial Package policy support, monthly subscription pricing and usage reporting. In September 2026 it launched managed services that chain post-bind tasks together: document retrieval, indexing, policy checking, AMS updates, policy delivery and renewal certificates.
How it works
The vendor’s policy checking page describes the flow:
- Gather documents. You upload the new policy as a PDF along with up to two source documents, such as the expiring policy, ACORD application, binder, bind order, proposal or quote. Custom engagements can use more sources and AMS data.
- Extract and compare. The AI captures policy data and validates it against a checklist of more than 900 points.
- Flag. Discrepancies come back in a color-coded report you can download as XLSX, CSV or PDF. JSON and API delivery are listed as in development.
- Review. In self-service, your staff review and approve the results, which arrive in minutes. In full-service, Patra’s team handles the work from retrieval through AMS updates, reviews it, and delivers in three business days.
Where it’s strong
Choice of operating model. Few vendors sell the same checking engine both as software and as a managed service. Agencies can start in-house and move volume to full-service, or the reverse.
E&O on the outsourced option. Patra says it takes on the E&O for full-service and custom work. Insurance Edge reported in September 2026 that Patra carries E&O coverage that extends to its AI-delivered services.
Commercial depth. The January 2026 update added Commercial Package policies, with up to five lines in one document: property, GL, auto, WC and umbrella. Other named lines include BOP, cyber, D&O, EPL, professional liability and excess.
Security. The vendor states SOC 2 compliance and ISO/IEC 27001 certification.
Where it falls short
Integrations aren’t spelled out. The vendor says the platform logs into your AMS and content management system, but doesn’t name specific systems as of October 2026. Self-service starts with PDF uploads.
Personal lines need a custom deal. Standard self-service and full-service cover commercial lines. Personal lines appear only under custom engagements.
Inconsistent line counts. The policy checking page cites 12 commercial lines (about 85% of commercial premium) in one place and 19 in its FAQ. Ask for the current list.
Unverified claims. Accuracy and savings figures (99.5% accuracy, 85%+ time saved) are the vendor’s own.
Pricing and setup
FinTech Global reported in January 2026 that self-service subscriptions start at $99 a month, include unlimited user seats and a 14-day free trial, and scale with policy volume. Full-service uses fixed per-transaction pricing. Patra’s own pages don’t list prices as of October 2026, so confirm the current plans. Self-service needs no integration project to start, since you upload PDFs.
Who should look elsewhere
- Personal lines agencies. A renewal tool that reviews home and auto renewals inside your AMS will fit better than a commercial-first checker.
- Agencies that want checking inside the AMS. A vendor with a documented, certified integration to your AMS will remove more manual steps.
- Large brokerages wanting one platform. A broader servicing platform that also handles proposals, certificates and submissions may replace several tools at once.
