Who wins with it
You're a commercial agency or brokerage whose staff lose hours comparing quotes, filling ACORD and supplemental apps and turning out proposals and COIs, and you want one AI tool for that plus phone and email service.
You need an AI that enters risks in carrier portals or raters, or you need a named, documented integration with your AMS before you buy.
The good and the catch
What it is
Cara is an AI platform for insurance agencies, brokerages and wholesalers. The legal entity is Oyster Technologies, Inc. It lists offices in New York and San Francisco. The founders are Vic Yeh (CEO), Nikhil Kansal and Jon Patel.
According to an AWS case study, the founders previously built a digital insurance brokerage and sold it to The McGowan Companies. They built an AI copilot for their own staff there, then turned it into Cara. The company doesn’t publish a founding or launch date.
On March 31, 2026, Cara announced an $8 million seed round led by Kearny Jackson. Press coverage says it reached seven-figure annual recurring revenue within about seven months, and the CEO said over 80% of customers came through word of mouth. Named customers include The McGowan Companies, Atlas Insurance Brokers, ISU Steadfast, Combined Agents of America and FirstChoice. The FirstChoice partnership (November 2025) gives FirstChoice member agencies access to Cara. FirstChoice’s own site lists 745+ members, without a date (checked October 2026). The vendor also lists a partnership with Valley Insurance Agency Alliance.
How it works
Cara is sold as four modules, per the vendor site (October 2026):
- Knowledge. You load appetite guides, SOPs, carrier contact lists and account data. Cara uses them as context for every task.
- Workflows. Prebuilt jobs for policy comparison and checking, quote proposals, and ACORD and supplemental form cross-filling. For forms, you upload a submission or client documents, and Cara fills the ACORD forms and supplemental applications from them.
- Orchestration. Custom workflows and servicing management that route work across teams and systems.
- Communication. An email assistant, an inbound voice AI receptionist and an outbound voice assistant.
The homepage also lists COI generation, document collection, call triage and a drag-and-drop tool for comparing quotes, contracts and policy documents. According to the AWS case study, Cara summarizes coverage differences between carrier quotes, flags exclusions and gaps, and produces branded proposals and renewal spreadsheets.
Cara says it connects to your AMS and CRM and can “read and write data” across your systems. The PIA Tech Council listing adds that it can run standalone if you don’t want to connect an AMS.
Where it’s strong
Commercial paperwork. The documented workflows match the slowest parts of commercial account work: comparing quotes, filling ACORD and supplemental apps, and building proposals. Both named case studies are commercial agencies. HH Insurance, a 70+ person agency, reports a cut of more than 50% in routine reviews.
Breadth in one tool. Document work, COIs, email and inbound and outbound voice sit in one platform. An agency doesn’t need a separate phone AI vendor.
Network distribution. FirstChoice and Valley Insurance Agency Alliance partnerships mean many member agencies can try it through their network.
Security in writing. SOC 2 Type 2, HIPAA, AES-256 encryption, immutable audit trails, data export and erasure, and isolated per-brokerage workspaces on AWS.
Where it falls short
Integrations aren’t named. Cara doesn’t publish which AMS it integrates with (checked October 2026). Its integrations page says it connects to your AMS and CRM, but names no system. Ask which AMS it writes to, and which fields.
No carrier-side work. We found nothing showing Cara entering risks in carrier portals or raters. It prepares documents; your staff still submit.
Thin outside evidence. We found no G2 or Capterra reviews as of October 2026. Claims such as 70% of workflows automated and about 10 hours saved per user per week are vendor-reported, without a method.
Oversight isn’t described. The vendor’s pages don’t say what Cara does on its own and what staff must approve, including for outbound calls.
Pricing and setup
Pricing isn’t published as of October 2026; you get a quote through a demo. FirstChoice members get access through the network partnership, but terms aren’t public. The AWS case study says enterprise brokerages can be onboarded within hours, with custom workflows live within days. Contract terms aren’t published.
Who should look elsewhere
- Personal lines shops focused on quoting volume. A comparative rater or a personal lines quoting tool does the carrier-side work Cara doesn’t.
- Agencies that need portal submission done for them. Look at AI assistants or browser tools that document carrier portal entry.
- Buyers who want to stay inside their AMS vendor. AI features from Applied or Vertafore run under your AMS’s existing permissions, with a documented integration.
