Who writes Personal auto

Carriers that write personal auto through independent agents, from preferred to nonstandard, with published driver and vehicle eligibility.

Personal auto insurance pays for injuries and damage the driver causes to others (bodily injury and property damage liability) and, optionally, damage to the insured's own car: collision for crashes, and comprehensive for theft, fire, weather and glass. Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage and medical payments or personal injury protection fill out the policy. Nearly every state requires liability coverage, and no-fault states require PIP. Lenders usually require collision and comprehensive on financed vehicles. The NAIC describes pricing as two steps: underwriting decides whether to accept the risk and in which tier, and rating sets the price. Common factors are driving record, where the car is garaged, age and marital status, prior insurance and any lapse, annual mileage, the vehicle's make and model and, in most states, a credit-based insurance score. Carriers split the market into preferred, standard and nonstandard tiers, and nonstandard carriers specialize in drivers with violations, lapses, SR-22 filings or no prior coverage. Auto is hard to place for young or newly licensed drivers, multiple at-fault accidents or major violations, excluded-driver situations, rideshare or delivery use, and high-performance or heavily modified vehicles. Agencies quote personal auto mostly through comparative raters, which run one entry across many carriers and bridge the chosen quote to the carrier's site to bind. Carrier portals handle the rest, along with endorsements and payments.
